April 1963 : "We don't have a prayer of staying in Vietnam"

When JFK became president, the Vietnam war had already begun (in 1955) and he had to deal with it. He first followed Eisenhower's lead and continued the policy engaged by him that provided political, economic and military support to South Vietnam. He reinforced the presence of the US army troops in the area.
But critics against Vietnam war began to be more present. He responded :
"We don't have a prayer of staying in Vietnam. Those people hate us. They are going to throw our asses out of there at any point. But I can't give up that territory to the communists and get the American people to re-elect me. »

He was in front of a crisis in Vietnam, there was more military support in the area but pro-communist Vietcong Forces continued to gain ground. This statement was clearly against the popularity of the president. A film called « The Fog of War » by Secretary of Defense McNamara demonstrates all the problems that Kennedy faced during his presidency about the Vietnam War.
